A letter from the League President,

As a league, we wanted to thank all the volunteers who have spent countless hours constructing the Cabot St. diamonds from nothing. Due to the overwhelming popularity of this league, more space was needed in order to accomodate all our games. The Cabot St. diamonds for the Tuesday night games were anonymously donated to Needham Summer Baseball. The donor also gave money towards fixing up the area. Although is a little unconventional, this is what we have. The other fields in town are tied up with other leagues and Walker School was kind enough to donate their field to us 2 nights a week. The diamonds are stone dust, and yes your child may get a little dirtier playing there. Stone dust is a safe surface commonly used in other areas of the country. The field is a work in progress and we understand there are parts that need to be tidied up. The fields are fenced in and locked and Needham Summer Baseball officials are the only ones who have access to open the field. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer any of your time to the "fixing up" process please contact us.

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the 2009 Needham Girls Rookie Softball League. You will find information here that will be helpful to you as the season begins. Please refer to it throughout the season.

The Needham Girls Rookie Softball League is dedicated to providing each child with the opportunity to play softball in an enjoyable and safe program. The league is fun and developmental. It is our hope that through this league each child will gain a knowledge of and develop an interest in playing the game of softball.

Please note that there must be a minimum of three parents on the field at all times. Each team has a manager, but parents attending the games must help on the field whenever they're able.

If you have any questions, please contact Becky Krechting at krechting@comcast.net or 781-449-2920.

Thank you for your support and we look forward to the 2009 softball season.

Play ball!

(A Division of Needham Summer Baseball)

Eligibility:
The Needham Girls Rookie Softball League is open to girls who are Needham residents or attend Needham schools, and are 6 years old by August 6, 2009.

Philosophy: Fun and development for the beginning ballplayer. There are no scores kept and all players will be in the batting line-up and in the field each inning.

Coaching: The league can only succeed through the efforts of parent volunteers. Each team will have a manager and as many assistant coaches as there are interested parents. There must be a minimum of three parents on the field at all times. Parents attending the games must help whenever they're able.

Season: The season will begin in late April and end in June.

Teams: You will be contacted by your child's coach prior to the first practice. Teams are formed according to school when possible.

Games: Your child's coach will provide you with a game schedule. Each team will play one night per week. Games are scheduled for Mondays, Tuesdays, or Wednesdays at 6:00 P.M. Make up games will be scheduled for Thursdays, or Fridays. All games will be played at the Walker School on Central Ave. Please be at the field promptly. The games last 1 1/2 hours. Each child must have an adult responsible for them at every game. One adult may only be responsible for their children and one other family. It is that adult's responsibility to ensure that the child is participating appropriately. The parent-coaches are there to teach the basics of softball, not to deal with behavioral issues. The responsible adult must be on the sidelines at all times.

Equipment: Each child should have a baseball glove with their name and phone number written on it. Plastic gloves, and gloves that do not fit will inhibit the child's fun and development. Players may bring a filled water bottle with their name and phone number written on it. Team shirts and hats will be provided and are to be worn to each game. If weather dictates, the shirt may be worn over warmer layers of clothing. All other equipment will be provided, including bats, balls, helmets, and bases. For safety reasons, children may NOT bring their own bats or balls. Gum, candy, and food may not be brought to games.

Cancellation: In the event that a game is canceled, the notice will appear at the top of this page. It will be posted there as soon as the decision is made, or by 4:00 P.M. at the latest on the day of the game. Rescheduled dates and times will be posted there also.

Please inform the manager if your child has an allergy, medical problem, or physical or developmental issue that may require additional attention.
